Lemke, Paar, and Wolf collect in this volume a state-of-the-art overview on all aspects relevant for IT security in automotive applications. After an introductory chapter written by the editors themselves, the contributions from experienced experts of different disciplines are structured into three parts. "Security in the Automotive Domain" describes applications for which IT security is crucial, like immobilizers, tachographs, and software updates. "Embedded Security Technologies" details security technologies relevant for automotive applications, e.g., symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, and wireless security. "Business Aspects of IT Systems in Cars" shows the need for embedded security in novel applications like location-based navigation systems and personalization.
The first book in this area of fast-growing economic and scientific importance, it is indispensable for both researchers in software or embedded security and professionals in the automotive industry.

Christof Paar holds the Chair for Communication Security at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, and is director of the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security. Before coming to Bochum, he was with WPI's ECE Department, USA, for seven years. He is co-founder of CHES (Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems), the international leading workshop series for embedded security. He has over 70 peer-reviewed publications and patents in the area of applied security. Dr. Paar has lectured intensively in academia and industry, including courses at NASA, Motorola Research and Philips Research. He is a pioneer in the emerging field of IT security for automotive applications.
This is the first book ever to explore and explain the emerging area of IT security in automotive applications, serving as an accessible, non-mathematical introduction to present - and future - security technologies for cars. From secure digital tachographs to systems for software updates, antivirus technology, rights management for onboard infotainment systems and secure bus systems, the coverage is comprehensive, detailed and compelling. Leading experts in automotive design and data security contribute sophisticated insight and advanced knowledge of strengths and weaknesses both now and in the cars of tomorrow.
