Beschreibung
Language, Nation and Power provides students with a discussion of the ways in which language has been (and is being) used to construct national (or ethnic) identity. It focuses on the processes by which a language can be planned and standardized and what the results of these processes are. Particular emphasis is given to the historical and social effects which nationalism has had on the development of language since the French Revolution. For students of linguistics, sociology and politics.

ROBERT McCOLL MILLAR is a Lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He has published widely on the interface between Gaelic and Scots in Scotland, language attitudes in modern Scotland, language at the margins of polities and rapid linguistic change due to language contact.
Zusammenfassung

Language and identity issues in a political context is one of the fastest growing areas of sociolinguistics and is taught in all applied courses from 1st year undergraduate to graduate level

It's also one of the most heavily researched areas.

This book is genuinely multidisciplinary, combining elements of sociolinguistics, sociology, history and politics together in an innovative way

Includes in-depth case-studies which aid both the illustration of the theoretical point and the understanding of complex situations

The book employs case studies from a wide range of historical periods and places, rather than concentrating largely on 20th century materials, as a number of its competitors do
