Ralph Scurlock is Emeritus Professor of Cryogenic Engineering, and formerly Director of the Institute of Cryogenics, University of Southampton, UK. In 1999, Ralph Scurlock was selected by the CEC for the Samuel C. Collins Award for his work on cryogenic technology. He was the first person from outside the USA to be awarded this prestigious prize. He is the author of many papers and several books including "Low Temperature Behaviour of Solids", 1965, "History and Origins of Cryogenics",1994, and "Low Loss Dewars and Tanks", 2004.
Thom Bostock is a consulting engineer with Rifi at the University of Southampton, and has over ten years of experience in commercial testing and consultancy, specialising in bespoke testing, manufacture and development of custom test rigs and machines; particularly for thermal and mechanical testing. Since joining RIfI in 2008 Thom has completed over 100 consultancy projects characterising a diverse range of materials including; cellular solids, composites, polymers, metals and engineered woods. Thom is an expert in mechanical measurements at low temperatures. Previous work including testing metallic and polymer tapes under liquid helium, cellular solids under liquid nitrogen, and a vast range of materials in cold gas environments.
Provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of cyrogenic liquid behaviour in small and large scale storage systems
Updated with new content relating to the design of miniature cryocoolers, condensers and reboilers
Includes helpful, practical summaries of each chapter for quick reference
1. Introduction.- 2 Evaporation of cryogenic liquids.- 3 Heat flows into a cryogenic storage system: overall picture.- 4 Insulation: the reduction of 'A' and 'B' heat in-flows.- 5 Multi-component liquids.- 6 The handling and transfer of cryogenic liquids.- 7 Design: some comments on the design of low-loss storage vessels, containers and tanks.- 8 Safe handling and storage of cyrogenic liquids.- Index.
